Longs Peak

From the Vintage Collection

Tones: Warm Gray, Deep Mustard, Ochre

Why We Love It: Tonal and textural, this piece is neutral but far from boring or simple. Though this painting was created more than 150 years ago, the imagery feels timeless. The soft, filtered light washing the beautiful mountains of Colorado and the warm, flowing hills below bring to mind long hours in the back of the family car, in the middle of nowhere on a road trip, daydreaming while staring out the window.

About the Artist:  American landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford was one of the leading members of the Hudson River School. He practiced Luminism, a painting style with an emphasis on light and soft atmospheric effects. This particular oil painting, which depicts Longs Peak, Colorado, is a part of the Denver Art Museum's collection.
