About the Artist:Â Born in Kassel, Germany in 1795, for many years Scheffer was a drawing teacher for the children of Louis Philippe I, the last king of France. Because of his connection to the monarchy, he obtained many commissions for portraiture from French aristocrats and royalty, and was a prolific painter of portraits of famous and influential people in his lifetime. He became known for his literary-inspired work, with paintings based on the works of Dante, Goethe and Lord Byron.
